Putter Prominence

The names Tiger and Phil have been on a lion’s share of major trophies in recent years.  But if it were all fair, two more names would be added: putters Odyssey and Scotty Cameron.  The putters were weilded by the winner in eight straight Majors in 2005 and 2006.  Woods (four) and Geoff Ogilvy (one) used Cameron models, while Michelson (two) and Campbell (one) stroked Odyssey sticks.

Winter Ace

Dr Ron Cortese made what club historians said was the first January ace in more than a century of play at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, in 2006 when he used a 4-iron to ace the club’s 178 yard 14th hole on the West Course.  Temperatures that reached into the low 50s-20 to 30 degrees higher than normal – allowed the course to be open that winter.

Another kind of Explosive Shot

Nervous jitters weren’t the only things that went up in smoke when the Roanoke, Texas, bomb squad crew was called to golf Hall of Famer Byron Nelson’s home in 2006.  Nelson and his wife, Peggy, became suspicious after seeing a box with a return address neither of them recognized.  Erring on the side of caution, plice detonated the box as a precaution.  That was a pitty, becauses the Nelsons later learned the box was full of Masters memorabilia and an innocent request for an autograph.

Getting Dressed Down

IN 1960, famed designer Oleg Cassini was asked to weigh in on the Arnold Palmer phenomenon: “He’s totally inelegant, a representative of the masses,” Cassini claimed.  “If his pants fit, he wouldn’t have to hitch them up all the time.”  Within six years, newly launched Arnold Palmer sportswear began outselling Cassini items at Macy’s in New York and thousands of other outlets around the country.

Wind Whipped

The strongest gust ever recorded during tournament play at Pebble Beach happened on this day in 1982.  It was measured at the minimum level of a hurricane – 74.5 miles per hour.  It’s tough enough trying to hit the seaside course’s fabled 18th fairway.  Imagine what it would be like with that kind of wind blowing.

Pricey Fees

As of 2006, nine of the 120 Myrtle Beach-area golf courses were charging in excess of $160 per round.  Surprisingly, people are not quaking at paying $179 to play Grande Dunes, the audacious beauty Golf Magazine named one of America’s top ten new courses when it opened in 2002.  Veteran golf packager Howard McMeekin said, “Believe it or not, the more expensive courses are the ones people are lining up to play the most.”

These Guys are Good

The popular PGA “These Guys Are Good” campaign, initiated in 1998, is the longest running of any in professional sports.  The golfers are eager to participate, do so for free, and often demonstrate that are, indeed, good.

A New Branch of the Service

Golf Fact of the Day:

Comedian Bob Hope often played golf with President Dwight Eisenhower, who always had a cadre of tall, muscular Secret Service agents present.  “I remember one time I sliced into the woods and was upset because a tree was in my way,” Hope recalled.  “Then the tree moved.”
